Woodhull Hospital Achieves Breakthrough in Reducing Infections: Clinches 2024 IPRO Quality Award

NYC Health + Hospitals/Woodhull, commonly known as Woodhull Hospital, has been commended for its outstanding contribution towards reducing healthcare associated infections. The hospital has marked a significant milestone by curbing the use of urinary catheters and central line catheters and by achieving six consecutive quarters of zero central line-associated bloodstream infections (CLABSIs).

These remarkable accomplishments have earned the hospital the prestigious 2024 IPRO Quality Award. This quality improvement initiative was a joint venture of the clinical teams from the inpatient medical, surgical, and critical care units. During daily interdisciplinary rounds, each case was meticulously evaluated to determine if the use of a central line or urinary catheter could be replaced with an alternative.

This approach expedited the removal of these invasive devices once they were no longer needed for patient care. Such interventions fostered productive team communication, boosted collaboration, and led to a considerable decrease in the use of central line and urinary catheters, subsequently leading to a significant reduction in CLABSI incidence. IPRO Hospital Quality Improvement Contract (HQIC), of which Woodhull Hospital is a part, is a federal program intending to enhance the care quality provided to Medicare patients across the U.S.

It is supported by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid (CMS). The IPRO Quality Award is a symbol of recognition for Woodhull Hospital’s relentless commitment towards patient safety and quality improvement. The reduction in the use of urinary and central line catheters mirrors the hospital’s continued efforts to uphold the highest standards of patient care. The credit for this remarkable achievement is attributed to the dedicated staff members who spare no effort to implement efficient infection prevention measures.

The award acknowledges their dedication and hard work. It appreciates the hospital’s proactive stance in infection prevention and their remarkable success in reducing the use of urinary catheters and central line catheters. This feat exemplifies that evidence-based interventions are effective in preventing healthcare-associated infections, enhancing patient care quality, and reducing hospital costs. These breakthrough achievements were celebrated at IPRO’s 40th annual conference on 11th June where experts discussed the evolving healthcare landscape, including AI’s potential role in transforming long-term care.
