According to state health officials, the incidence of flu and other respiratory diseases is escalating in New Hampshire, with a sharp spike noticed not only regionally but also nationally. Presently, the richly populated areas of the state are the most affected by acute respiratory illnesses. Among these, Rockingham County reported a switch from moderate to high activity level within a week, while Belknap, Merrimack, and Hillsborough counties observe a moderate activity level. The remaining part of the state falls into the category of low respiratory illness activity.
As commented by Stephanie Szopa, Elliot Hospital’s Infection Prevention Officer, this surge in respiratory diseases, which could include coronaviruses, enterovirus, rhinovirus, and influenza, aligns with annual trends. Contributing factors include the cold weather, reduced humidity in the air, and holiday season travels. With congestion in stores and holiday gatherings, transmission rates are expected to surge.
It is noted that children and young adults are the most susceptible demographic. For instance, an elementary school in Fremont reported approximately 100 students out sick last week. Elliot Hospital has notably seen a greater influx of patients in the emergency room, either requiring admission or testing for illnesses. To curb emergency room visits, Szopa encourages patients to first contact their respective primary care providers.
Besides aiding the hospitals in the long run, financial savings can also be realized. With the holiday season in swing accompanied with increased travel and gatherings, Szopa urges citizens to adopt frequent handwashing practices and to consider quarantining if flu-like symptoms are experienced. She also endorses the procurement of the flu vaccine to bolster protection against the spread of diseases.
