Unwavering Commitment to Quality Care: Kaiser Permanente South San Francisco Hospital Honored with Leapfrog ‘A’ Safety Grade

Solidifying a long-standing commitment to healthcare quality, Kaiser Permanente South San Francisco Hospital has once again distinguished itself by earning an ‘A’ grade for patient safety. This prestigious recognition was awarded by The Leapfrog Group in its biannual Hospital Safety Grades report. The Leapfrog Group is an independent national organization run by employers and large healthcare beneficiaries. It reviews hospital clinical data and bestows grades on nearly 3,000 hospitals across the United States.

The grading criteria encompass about two dozen measures that scrutinize patient injuries, medical and medication errors, as well as the rate of infections. Earning the Leapfrog Group’s ‘A’ grade, especially over a decade-long period, is a testament to the tireless efforts of the entire Kaiser Permanente South San Francisco team in securing patient safety. Shasta Addessi, interim senior vice president and area manager of Kaiser Permanente South San Francisco, views these ratings as indicative of the superior healthcare quality offered to patients, members, and the North San Mateo County community. Outstandingly, Kaiser Permanente hospitals fared extraordinarily well in the Leapfrog evaluations.

Along with the South San Francisco location, twelve other Northern California facilities received ‘A’ grades. This accounted for more than a 60% ‘A’ rating within the Northern California cluster, which towered over the statewide ‘A’ average of approximately 30%. A similar pattern emerged nationally as well, where more than 60% of the 39 Kaiser Permanente hospitals that qualified for a grade received an ‘A’ score. This significantly outmatched the national average where fewer than 30% of hospitals claiming the top rating. The purpose of this grading system is beyond mere recognition. These grades are released as a free resource to enable patients and their families to make informed healthcare decisions based on each hospital’s safety record. Serving 12.5 million members, Kaiser Permanente has firmly positioned itself as one of the leading integrated healthcare providers in the US, and the Leapfrog Safety ‘A’ grade further cements their commitment to offering superior and safe healthcare services.
