Unveiling the Sequential Risk Factors of Clinical Candida Auris: Findings from a Comprehensive Study

In a groundbreaking research published on October 2 in Clinical Infectious Diseases, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and Florida Health Department have shed light on seven primary risk factors associated with the clinical progression of Candida auris (C. auris). The study was conducted from January 2019 through December 2023, during which patient data from various Florida healthcare facilities was meticulously analyzed.

The patient population comprised those who had developed C. auris infections following a period of previous colonization. By methodically going through 1,073 patient records, researchers managed to identify 105 patients who had documented clinical specimens after colonization, and 578 patients who had experienced colonization exclusively. These extensive utilization of patient records aided in identifying factors that displayed a significant association with progression to clinical cases of C. auris.

By recognizing these critical risk factors in the clinical progression of C. auris post colonization, healthcare facilities are now equipped with the necessary knowledge to put forward effective testing protocols and sophisticated infection control measures. The authors of the study advocated for healthcare facilities to emphasize on high-acuity patients during early C. auris screening and to handle them with caution during infection interventions and transmission-based precautions.

An upcoming live webinar scheduled on November 6, 2025, between 12:00 PM – 1:00 PM CDT is also recommended for a more in-depth understanding of the subject.
