Antibiotic-resistant bacteria or ‘superbugs’ present a growing concern in healthcare. These organisms have evolved resistance to multiple antibiotics, rendering standard treatments highly ineffective. As a consequence, patients infected with such superbugs endure lengthier, costlier and often less efficacious treatment protocols. These bacteria have a high prevalence in crowded environments, such as hospitals and intensive care units, thereby amplifying the risk to critically ill patients.
With medical practitioners compelled to resort to toxic or combination treatments, patients may experience intensified side effects. Serious infections can prove fatal due to treatment delays leading to organ failure. Increased hospital stays and heightened medical costs are other adverse outcomes of antibiotic resistance. This issue is fueled by the misuse and overuse of antibiotics, self-medication, incomplete course of antibiotics and the disregulated use of these drugs in livestock and agriculture.
Additionally, ineffective infection control measures in hospitals facilitate the spread of these resistant microbes. The rapid evolution of bacteria coupled with the lack of new antibiotics exacerbate this problem. Common infections, including urinary tract infections, pneumonia, sepsis, and diarrhea, are becoming increasingly challenging to manage. Acinetobacter baumannii, Klebsiella pneumoniae and Pseudomonas aeruginosa are examples of pathogens demonstrating alarming resistance. Fungal pathogens such as Candida auris and Aspergillus are not far behind in this resistance trend.
Another major concern is the rise of drug-resistant strains including, Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), Drug-Resistant tuberculosis (DR-TB), Carbapenem-Resistant Enterobacteriaceae (CRE), and Vancomycin-Resistant Enterococcus (VRE). Evidently, comprehensive and concerted action is indispensable to combat this looming threat.
