UConn John Dempsey Hospital: Groundbreaking Excellence in Infection Prevention and Patient Care

The UConn John Dempsey Hospital has once again distinguished itself as a premier healthcare institution on a global scale, having been named one of the World’s Best Hospitals for an astonishing fifth consecutive year. This merit, conferred by Newsweek and Statista, comes as a result of superior quality metrics, endorsements from top medical professionals, and glowing patient reviews. As an academic medical center of the highest caliber, UConn John Dempsey Hospital consistently strives to elevate the standard for exemplary patient care and safety, a commitment that has cemented its reputation for excellence. Dr. Andy Agwunobi, CEO of UConn Health and executive vice president for health affairs, proudly underlines the incredible effort and dedication of the entire UConn Health team, whose commitment to setting the highest healthcare standards in Connecticut has enabled this remarkable feat.

In 2022, UConn John Dempsey Hospital graced Newsweek’s World’s Best Hospitals list coming in at a commendable 400th. Fast forward to now, the hospital has leapfrogged to the 275th position, up from their ranking of 297 just last year. This year’s appraisal process centered primarily on hospital quality scores, utilizing new data on accreditation, safety, quality, and patient experiences gathered across numerous countries. A notable component of the evaluation was the Patient-Reported Outcome Measures Implementation Survey (PROMs), a valuable assessment tool involving validated questionnaires filled out by patients that measures their perceived wellbeing and quality of life.

Dr. Scott Allen, Chief Medical Officer and patient safety officer at UConn Health, noted the hospital’s continued upward trajectory in the rankings as indicative of its status as a leading provider of outstanding healthcare and its commitment to creating a phenomenal patient experience. Furthermore, UConn John Dempsey Hospital has notably achieved recognition for excellence in infection prevention and was the honoured recipient of the Patient Experience Award, underscored by the Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems (HCAHPS) survey.

Caryl Ryan, Chief Operating Officer for UConn John Dempsey Hospital, Chief Nursing Officer, and Vice President for Quality and Patient Care Services at UConn Health, warmly extends her congratulations to the hospital’s outstanding team of medical professionals, whose consistent efforts to provide superior patient care have contributed to this prestigious recognition in the past five years. The Newsweek’s World’s Best Hospitals ranking, initiated in March 2019, and the 2026 rankings comprises data from 2,500 hospitals in 32 countries.
