UConn John Dempsey Hospital Bags Esteemed ‘World’s Best Hospital’ Title for Third Year Running

Connecticut’s UConn John Dempsey Hospital, a renowned institution under the auspices of the Schools of Medicine and Dental Medicine, has been honored with the prestigious ‘World’s Best Hospital’ title by Newsweek for the third year in a row. Only five hospitals from Connecticut have been included in Newsweek’s laudable 2024 World’s Best Hospitals listing, with UConn’s teaching hospital being one of them. Aside from the global recognition, UConn Health has also been acknowledged for its excellence in the field of infection prevention. Notably, it stands as the only institution in Connecticut to have received commendation for providing an impressive patient experience.

Newsweek’s 2024 Patient Satisfaction Award was also handed to UConn Health, following a comprehensive analysis of publicly accessible data. Only top-performing institutions in terms of patient experience, such as UConn John Dempsey Hospital, have been further recognized for excelling in patient care. Cindy Molin, VP of the Office of Patient Experience at UConn Health, articulated that patients prefer UConn Health for access to superior medical innovation, safety standards, and an unparalleled patient experience, embodying the hospital’s patient-centered approach. Newsweek’s recognition was established based on patient survey data (HCAHPS) provided by Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), assessing the hospital’s cleanliness, communication, care transition, and discharge information, among other categories.

Moreover, the Joint Commission National Patient Safety Goals for various forms of care were also evaluated. For recognition, the hospital needed to achieve rating benchmarks in all 10 HCAHPS measures. Dr. Bruce T. Liang, UConn Health Interim CEO, expressed gratitude over the recurring recognition, stating that the hospital’s expertise in academic medicine is attracting a record-breaking number of patients. UConn Health’s superior infection prevention measures have resulted in Newsweek recognizing these efforts for two consecutive years in 2023 and 2024.

UConn Health’s Chief Operating Officer and Chief Nursing Officer, Caryl Ryan, RN, also congratulated all staff who contributed to the prestigious recognition, expressing immense gratitude to every patient for entrusting their care to the institution. A definitive guide to the world’s best hospitals, initiated by Newsweek in March 2019, the 2024 list encompasses data on 2,400 hospitals in 30 countries, organized according to nation and US states. Using four data sources for the evaluation process, the listing recognizes hospitals distinguished for their patient experience, patient safety, hygiene measures, quality of treatment, and waiting times, among other aspects.
