Rural hospital leaders from all corners of the United States convened to share strategies and insights for enhancing safety culture, governance, and reliability of care at the maiden Rural Patient Safety Convening, hosted by the American Hospital Association (AHA) in Little Rock, Arkansas between October 6-8. This unique confluence, an integral part of AHA’s Patient Safety Initiative (PSI) attracted over 50 participants, bridging the geographical gap from Alaska to Maine. The sessions were instrumental in fostering knowledge exchange about innovative methods and proven strategies for circumventing issues typically encountered by rural hospitals.
The focus of the event extended to how rural healthcare providers can leverage technology, data, and innovation to cater to the safety needs of their patient demographic and serve their rural communities more effectively. In true spirit of practical learning, the PSI’s Escape Room Simulation stood out, challenging hospital leaders with various decision-making and organizational hurdles, showcasing an immersive exercise highlighting the importance of effective communication and teamwork. The role of simulation in reinforcing system learning was hard to miss.
The convening uniquely aggregated hospital leaders from diverse backgrounds and expertise, facilitating practical, honest, and progression-focused discourse. Attendees actively participated in both small and large group dialogues, with each attendee finalizing the convening by selecting a priority action item to take back to their home teams – tools, resources, and readily accessible expertise to bolster safety culture.
Through the PSI, AHA has demonstrated a commitment to fostering collaboration among hospital leaders to share successful strategies and identify areas of improvement. A continued commitment to patient safety, trust, resilience, and collaboration in rural health is evident as AHA anticipates hosting the Rural Maternal Safety Convening in Omaha, Nebraska, in the following month.
