Transforming a Personal Misfortune into a Global Mission Against Antimicrobial Resistance: Mallory’s Story

Out of personal tragedy stemmed a global mission about a growing medical menace – antimicrobial resistance (AMR). This narrative explores the journey of Diane Shader Smith who channeled her grief into increasing public awareness around AMR, triggered by the irreplaceable loss of her daughter, Mallory.

Mallory, diagnosed with cystic fibrosis at only three years, found her health especially challenged when infected with Burkholderia cepacia at age twelve. Such bacterial colonization often leads to a never-ending cycle of hospitals, lung treatments, and antibiotic therapy for those with cystic fibrosis. Unfortunately, antibiotic efficacy can wane over time, invoking greater antimicrobial resistance against pathogens persistent within the lungs. Despite the escalating treatments, no therapeutic cocktail could stave off the invading bacteria. As Mallory’s condition worsened, she became a suitable candidate for a double-lung transplant. However, even with successful transplantation, the relentless pathogen reappeared, claiming Mallory’s life at 25.

The immensity of the AMR issue dawned upon Diane, a professional publicist, only after Mallory’s untimely demise. Consequently, she has made it her life’s mission to bridge the gap between global health leaders battling AMR and the public largely oblivious to this looming threat. Over time, Diane has diligently worked on advocacy measures to raise AMR awareness, delivering hundreds of enlightening presentations across various audience demographics. Her endeavors also include publishing Mallory’s memoir titled ‘Salt in Soul’ and working on a documentary recounting her daughter’s courageous fight.

The creation of the Global AMR Diary website is another feather in her cap. The platform invites individuals to share their unique AMR stories, hoping to engage people through personal narratives. Diane discusses her role in AMR awareness building, Mallory’s struggle with cystic fibrosis, and her ongoing advocacy initiatives in an interview. More insights from this conversation are set to be released.
