Tracing the Path to Excellence: Meritus Medical Center’s Journey from a ‘D’ to Five Consecutive ‘A’ Safety Grades

Meritus Medical Center, based in Hagerstown, has accomplished a significant feat, earning its fifth consecutive ‘A’ Hospital Safety Grade from The Leapfrog Group, an esteemed national nonprofit organization committed to optimizing patient safety. This prestigious recognition places Meritus in an elite group of hospitals – the top 12 percent across the country – that have demonstrated consistent excellence in averting medical errors, infections, and patient injuries. This marks a key milestone in the hospital’s journey, especially considering the challenging times in 2018 when it was allotted a ‘D’ grade, triggering the sudden retirement of the then-CEO, Joseph P. Ross.

Citing the hospital’s commendable performance, Leah Binder, president of The Leapfrog Group, observed that achieving an ‘A’ Hospital Safety Grade is indicative of an unwavering commitment to patient safety. She lauded Meritus Medical Center, its leadership, professionals, staff, and volunteers, for creating a patient-centric culture of excellence. Leapfrog determines these grades by evaluating over 30 evidence-supported factors, encompassing infection prevention, response to surgical complications, and staff responsiveness. Interestingly, only about 27 percent of Maryland’s hospitals managed to secure an ‘A’ rating in this cycle. In such a context, Meritus obtaining its fifth straight ‘A’ status since Spring 2023 stands testimony to its truly transformative journey.

The hospital’s Chief Operating Officer, Carrie Adams, PharmD, expressed her team’s elation and commitment to community health, noting the significant role of leadership in shaping performance culture. She reflected on the monumental efforts that went into improving the hospital’s grades since 2018. The picture was quite grim back then, with Meritus, which happens to be Washington County’s largest community hospital, notably underperforming in 16 out of 28 patient-safety determinants. However, the arrival of Dr. Maulik Joshi, a public health and healthcare quality specialist, in November 2019 marked a turning point. This subsequently led to a comprehensive revamping of the hospital culture.

Under Dr. Joshi’s leadership, a renewed focus on safety and team collaboration triggered a dramatic transformation. The frontline workers, including support staff, developed a clear understanding of their pivotal roles as part of a cohesive, mission-driven team. Servicing an annual footfall of 75,000 emergency room visits, the hospital’s role in maintaining the health of the residents of Washington County and beyond has never been more crucial. A testament to the revived culture of excellence, a patient review from Oscar S., a resident of Germantown, appreciating the professionalism, kindness, and respect he was treated with during his stay further echoes the hospital’s successful patient-centered approach.

In addition to their commitment towards patient safety, Meritus envisages to amplify its impact on the community. Come July 2025, the Meritus School of Osteopathic Medicine is slated to admit an inaugural batch of 90 students, aided by over $1.6 million in scholarships. This initiative aims to curb the physician shortage in Maryland and beyond. Looking forward, Meritus aspires to solidify its reputation as a regional improvement pioneer.
