Towards an Improved Infection Prevention Culture: Australian Government Funds Research Projects

The Australian government’s recent commitment of over $2.5m (A$3.7m) for rigorous, targeted research is now set to contribute to the elevation of Infection Prevention and Control (IPC) standards in their aged care homes. Implemented under the National Health and Medical Research Council’s dedicated research initiative, the Targeted Call for Research (TCR), this financial boost will be split evenly among four projects. Each project stands to receive nearly $664.1k (A$1m) to delve deeper into the successful execution of IPC programs.

Particular attention will be paid to various influences that directly affect the efficacy of these IPC measures. Each of the four projects has intentions to explore these factors, aiming to develop comprehensive, evidence-based interventions. Both public and private aged care homes stand to reap the benefits of these improved measures.

The ultimate goal of this investment is not merely to understand the key elements of successful IPC program implementation but to leverage these insights to guide actionable steps. This will ensure that both public and private aged care facilities successfully incorporate these inform decisions about IPC programs. As a result of this prudent investment, Australia’s aged care residents can anticipate improved high-quality, evidence-backed IPC measures guarding their health.
