The Value of APIC: Finding a Professional Home in Infection Prevention – Jessica Swain

In an insightful conversation with Jacob Hutcherson, Jessica Swain discussed the significant role that the Association for Professionals in Infection Control and Epidemiology (APIC) has played in her career. Like many professionals in the field, Jessica didn’t initially know much about APIC, but her first experience with the organization in 2015 opened the door to a wealth of opportunities and lifelong connections.

Jessica’s introduction to APIC came through a colleague who was attending an APIC New England Conference. Intrigued, Jessica decided to join her and attend the event. It just so happened that the conference was seeking new members for their board of directors, and Jessica, eager to get more involved, submitted her willingness to serve. This bold move landed her the position of Nominating and Awards Director-elect, marking the beginning of her long-term commitment to the organization.

Since then, Jessica has continued to serve on the APIC New England Board of Directors, finding the experience both professionally enriching and personally rewarding. She highlighted the importance of being part of a network of infection preventionists who are passionate about their work and dedicated to advancing best practices in the field. Jessica explained that APIC not only allowed her to connect with a supportive community but also provided countless learning opportunities, from attending events to engaging with experts across the country.

In addition to her work with the APIC New England chapter, Jessica has also made an impact on the national level. She currently serves on the editorial panel for The Prevention Strategist, APIC’s magazine, where she collaborates with other infection prevention experts and even co-authored a paper. This role has opened doors for new relationships and professional development, further solidifying her commitment to the organization.

For Jessica, APIC has been more than just a professional association—it’s been a key driver in her career growth and a source of continuous learning. She expressed her hope that more infection preventionists take advantage of what APIC has to offer, noting that those who aren’t involved may be missing out on critical resources, networking, and the chance to contribute to the field. Jessica’s experience stands as a testament to the value of professional organizations like APIC in fostering community, collaboration, and career development in infection prevention.
