The Role of Reusable Healthcare Textiles in Infection Prevention, Supply Chain Stability, and Environmental Sustainability

The textile healthcare sector, represented by organizations like the Textile Rental Services Association (TRSA), plays a monumental role in driving the healthcare industry forward, and promoting improved patient safety and eco-friendly practices. The TRSA, a cornerstone in a $50 billion industry, supplies hygienically certified health care contact textiles (HCTs) and personal protective equipment (PPE)—all integral components in the healthcare supply chain scattered in over 2,500 facilities. However, the pervasiveness of single-use, disposable HCTs is an aspect of the American healthcare system that needs reassessment.

During public health emergencies like the recent COVID-19 pandemic, reliance on disposable HCTs led to supply chain instability, making hospitals vulnerable to global shortages and delays. It is noteworthy that over 90% of HCTs currently utilized in the US are classified as single-use, despite the evidence supporting reusable HCTs as equally, if not more, protective. The utilization of reusable, hygienically clean HCTs by TRSA members proved invaluable during the pandemic, providing a much-needed solution to the scarcity of disposable PPE.

As we navigate the post-pandemic world, there is a growing recognition for the need to reinforce supply chain resilience, reduce waste, and harness cost-effective alternatives like reusable HCTs. A bipartisan congressional approach led to a two-day workshop by the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) and the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine (NASEM) to study the advantages of this alternative during such crises. The findings were conclusive—increasing reusable PPE use has the potential to enhancing supply chain stability, reduce environmental impact, and lower costs.

Enacting legislation to encourage the wide-scale adoption of reusable HCTs was seen as necessary. Since long-term policy shifts require time, TRSA recommends NIOSH to issue a ‘Workplace Solutions’ document as a preliminary step. This document is not an enforcement mandate, but a tool designed to foster awareness in healthcare facilities and provide guidance on incorporating reusable PPE in their daily operations.

The healthcare sector cannot afford to experience another PPE crisis akin to the one during COVID-19. The answer lies in increasing the use of reusable HCTs—a strategy that ensures supply chain stability, cost savings, and environmental sustainability. TRSA remains dedicated to advocating for policies that prioritize reusable healthcare textiles, providing protection to frontline workers, and ultimately ensuring patient safety.
