The Power of Community in Infection Prevention: My Journey with APIC – Sarah Wilkerson

Sarah Wilkerson shares how joining the Association for Professionals in Infection Control and Epidemiology (APIC) played a transformative role in her career, particularly as she transitioned into Infection Prevention. Immediately upon entering the field, Sarah joined her local APIC chapter, attending monthly in-person meetings with fellow Infection Preventionists. These gatherings provided an essential support network, especially valuable for her as a sole practitioner. The camaraderie and shared experiences within APIC offered Sarah a space to learn, exchange strategies, and even vent, creating bonds that continue to be integral to her work today.

Early on, APIC provided Sarah with access to peers who understood the unique challenges of Infection Prevention. The group’s collective knowledge was invaluable in navigating complex situations, and Sarah found comfort and strength in being able to consult others facing similar issues. This network allowed her to connect with individuals who could provide insight into specific Infection Prevention strategies and solutions. The open exchange of ideas and mutual support fostered through APIC laid the foundation for Sarah’s professional growth and confidence in her role.

Sarah’s involvement with APIC didn’t stop at local chapter meetings. Over time, her commitment deepened, leading her to hold leadership roles within the organization. She became a chapter board member and eventually served as chapter president, which allowed her to contribute to APIC’s mission in a more impactful way. Through these positions, Sarah gained leadership experience, influencing local Infection Prevention initiatives and encouraging others in the field to stay involved. Her leadership roles also gave her insights into the broader trends and challenges in Infection Prevention beyond her facility.

While APIC offers an extensive range of resources and events, Sarah particularly values the national conferences for their unique networking opportunities and educational sessions. Although it’s challenging to attend every year, she makes a point of participating whenever possible, as these conferences offer her access to the latest research and innovations. She encourages other Infection Preventionists to attend these events to stay connected with the broader field and to gain fresh perspectives that can be applied back at their facilities.

For Sarah, joining APIC wasn’t just about membership—it was about becoming part of a community that fuels her passion for Infection Prevention. She urges anyone entering the field to get involved in professional organizations early on. The connections, resources, and mentorship available through APIC have proven invaluable throughout her career, providing a support system she continues to rely on.
