The Path to Certification in Infection Prevention: Tawanna McInnis-Cole

In her interview with Jacob Hutcherson, Tawanna McInnis-Cole shared her journey to becoming a certified Infection Preventionist—a journey that was marked by patience, persistence, and a dedication to mastering her field. Tawanna explained that although some professionals rush to get certified within a couple of years, she took her time to ensure she was fully prepared before taking on the challenge.

Starting in the field in 2006, Tawanna didn’t achieve certification until 2011. She described herself as a “slow grower,” explaining that she wanted to be absolutely confident in her knowledge and skills before sitting for the exam. Tawanna’s approach was deliberate; she took the time to learn every aspect of Infection Prevention thoroughly, believing that her first attempt at the certification exam should be her last.

To prepare, Tawanna utilized a range of resources, including study sessions at the National APIC Conference and specialized prep courses. She even formed a study group with another colleague, which not only boosted her confidence but also expanded her professional network. By the time she sat for the exam, Tawanna felt well-equipped and ready to prove her expertise, not just to herself but also to the broader community of Infection Prevention professionals.

Tawanna emphasized the importance of certification as more than just a personal achievement; it’s a mark of excellence for the entire organization. She noted that having a certified team of Infection Preventionists speaks volumes about a hospital’s commitment to patient safety and quality care. Certification acts as a stamp of approval, showcasing that the professionals leading the charge in infection control are true experts in their field.

For Tawanna, certification is not just a credential—it’s a way to build confidence, establish credibility, and open doors to new opportunities within the healthcare community. She encourages anyone in the field of Infection Prevention to take the time to invest in their own development, emphasizing that the knowledge gained through the certification process is invaluable both for individual growth and for the advancement of patient safety initiatives.
