Striving for Excellence: A Deep Dive into Infection Control Standards in Oregon’s Hospitals

In a concerted effort to reduce healthcare-associated infections (HAIs), hospitals across Oregon have made significant progress, yet they still struggle to meet national benchmarks in certain infection control parameters. According to recent data from the Oregon Health Authority (OHA), key areas of improvement include surgical site infections, catheter-associated urinary tract infections, and MRSA bloodstream infections.

Dr. Dat Tran, medical director of the HAI Program in Oregon, underscores the critical nature of these data findings. He articulated that the objective of the collected data is not just to provide an overview of problem areas; it is rather to guide healthcare professionals towards understanding their strengths, identifying gaps, and devising strategic interventions to amplify infection control measures. The data thus serves as a vital tool to improve patient safety and reduce HAIs across the state.

The OHA’s comprehensive data dashboard provides an in-depth comparison of hospital performance statewide against national standards. While there is an observable degree of advancement in infection control since 2015, particularly in some critical access hospitals, these facilities in Oregon still fall behind the desired infection metrics. In 2024, Oregon’s healthcare facilities reported 957 HAI cases. Even though certain areas have seen notable improvements, the state’s critical access hospitals still exhibit a higher incidence of infections compared to national standards.

The OHA, cognizant of this challenge, is taking proactive measures to support hospitals. These include offering technical assistance, bolstering infection control education in partnership with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and equipping healthcare personnel with tools to mitigate HAIs. Such initiatives underscore the commitment to improving patient safety across Oregon, leaving no facility, region or personnel behind in the process.
