Shedding Light on Long Covid’s Impact and the Strides in Infection Prevention Amid the Pandemic

On Labor Day in the United States, three senators suffering from Long Covid, Tim Kaine, Todd Young, and former senator Jim Inhofe, called for Congress’ attention towards the needs of those afflicted by this prolonged form of COVID-19. They pointed out that despite the country’s gradual return to pre-pandemic routines, normalcy remains elusive for many. The lingering effects of the disease have affected citizens across party and economic divides, emphasizing the need for Congress to understand and address the impact of Long Covid on the workforce and recuperation.

With an upward trend in infection rates, it remains crucial for preventative measures on Covid-19 transmission to stay in place across the globe, as researchers continue studying different SARS-CoV-2 variants.

In the United States, 108.13 million cases and a death toll of 1.17 million have been registered. India records the second-highest number of cases at 45 million. Russia, with 823,623 deaths, has the second-highest pandemic-related death toll worldwide.

To date, 70.5% of the global population have received at least a single dose of a coronavirus vaccine. However, in low-income countries, the rate drops to a web 32.6%. While countries like Canada, China, Denmark, France, Italy, the United Kingdom, and the United States, report that at least 75% of their populations have received at least one dose of a vaccine, many of the world’s poorest regions remain under vaccinated, with rates below 20%. The impetuous remains on addressing these global gross inequities in vaccine distribution.
