Rising From the Ashes: A Holistic Approach to Counter Burnout Among Healthcare Professionals

In the perpetual grind of healthcare provision, mental well-being is indispensable. Yet, healthcare professionals across roles and responsibilities are grappling with the pervasive issue of burnout. The current pandemic amplifies this crisis even more, making it crucial to adopt proactive and comprehensive strategies for the prevention and mitigation of burnout. This subject is the central theme for ‘Infection Control Today,’ a dedicated spotlight on the dire need for addressing mental health among healthcare practitioners. Constant exposure to stressful situations and demands that exceed capacities often result in fatigue and exhaustion among healthcare workers. Stories of healthcare professionals, like an emergency department nurse who had to ‘fake it until you make it,’ highlight a grim reality; most of them tend to ignore their health and overlook signs of chronic stress, leading to eventual burnout.

The World Health Organization (WHO) defines ‘burnout’ as a syndrome stemming from the long-term unmanaged stress at the workplace. While the problem of burnout isn’t new, the complications arising from the COVID-19 pandemic escalate its intensity among healthcare professionals. According to data from HHS, 54% of doctors and nurses reported burnout before 2020, a figure that rose to 66% during the pandemic. Infection preventionists (IPs), who oversee the prevention and control of infections within healthcare settings, are a conspicuous lot among the healthcare burnout victims. A recent study recorded self-reported burnout rates of 65% among IPs between July and August 2021.

Mitigating burnout demands a thoughtful approach, much like the multi-pronged strategies employed for preventing health care-associated infections (HAIs). The intervention to address burnout must be in tandem with the risk factors categorized at three levels of a healthcare institution: individual, departmental, and organizational. By implementing curative measures at each of these levels, the healthcare sector can stride towards healing the existing instances of burnout and prevent future burnout among healthcare professionals. The burnout situation necessitates collective action from all stakeholders in healthcare to contain this excessive attrition. Focused and strategic approach will ensure that the healthcare sector doesn’t lose its capable workforce.
