Rise in Flu Cases Amidst Lower Vaccination Rate: Infection Prevention Measures Crucial

The southeastern region of Wisconsin has registered a sudden upsurge in incidences of influenza, commonly known as the flu. The state’s health professionals have hit the alarm bells, noticing a higher rate of hospitalizations due to flu. While the flu season inauguration was belated in Wisconsin, a large rate of infection surge has marked the past couple of weeks, sparking off a worrying trend. Compounding the problem, the flu vaccination rates for the current period have been witnessed to decrease in comparison to anticipated levels. The individual at the helm of infection prevention at Froedtert Hospital, Dr. Mary Beth Graham, has labeled the increment as ‘dramatic’.

Detailed reports by the Wisconsin Department of Health Services raise the alarm regarding the ‘very high activity’ of influenza happening statewide. The data shown in a recently issued line graph reveals a sharp rise in emergency hospital visits resulting from respiratory illnesses. In the one-week period from January 12-18, 2025, an estimated 6.1% of the emergency room visits stemmed from a diagnosis of influenza. The number portrays a significant rise compared to both Covid-19 and RSV tallies and starkly surpasses the previous flu season’s figures.

The elevated flu numbers haven’t come as a surprise yet coincide with a disappointing scenario where flu vaccination rates have observed a downhill course. The scale of the problem stands out among the older and more vulnerable population groups, who under typically favorable conditions, should ideally achieve a 70% vaccination rate. As it stands, for the overall eligible group, the influenza immunization rate sits around the 32% mark. For the group aged 65 and above, the rate is tracking at a suboptimal 60%.

However, it’s not too late for individuals to opt for a flu vaccination during the current season. Dr. Dan Shirley, leading the charge on infection prevention at UW Health, suggests that such peaks are likely to be experienced for additional weeks. A timely flu shot could reduce your risk severity for an influenza infection as we venture into February.

Besides immunization, additional steps can be embraced to mitigate the flu spread and impacts. Dr Shirley advices that key measures such as staying home when unwell, getting timely testing for diagnosis and most importantly, vulnerable individuals seeking early care could potentially facilitate effective treatment strategies. The effectiveness of anti-viral medications is notably high when administered early during an influenza infection, generally within the initial 48 hours.
