Revolutionizing Standard of Care: Innovative Air and Surface Decontamination Solution Sees Unprecedented Success in Reducing Hospital Infections

A landmark study published in the American Journal of Infection Control showcases innovative medical-grade environmental decontamination technology that actively works to combat healthcare-associated infections (HAIs). This ground-breaking device, known as the Induct Guardian Series air decontamination system, is powered by ActivePure Technology designed by ActivePure Medical, a division of AP Sciences Group, LLC.

The comprehensive research conducted across different intensive care units (ICUs) at Ochsner Health Center-West Bank, Louisiana, and Lexington Veterans Affairs (VA) Healthcare System in Kentucky, unraveled remarkable findings. ActivePure’s technology revealed a considerable reduction in air and surface contamination. This included harmful organisms like methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and various types of fungi, with reductions noted to be between 96% and 99% for MRSA and a general decrease in overall HAIs by 70%.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) have highlighted that nearly 722,000 HAIs and approximately 75,000 HAI-related deaths occur in the U.S. every year. Not only do these infections cause profound personal suffering and increased mortality risk, but they also burden the healthcare system with direct medical costs of an estimated $28.4 billion annually. With an additional societal cost reaching up to $12.4 billion, finding effective solutions to combat HAIs is of utmost importance.

With its targeted approach towards environmental reservoirs harboring preventable infections, the Induct Guardian Series air decontamination system, with ActivePure Technology, has the potential to enhance patient safety significantly. Over a 21-month evaluation period, the Ochsner Health site reported a substantial decline of 71% in aggregate HAIs, while the reduction in the Lexington VA site reached 70% over 12 months.

ActivePure Technology mimics natural atmospheric cleansing processes, generating potent molecules that deactivate pathogens in the air and on surfaces. Operating continuously, it offers automated protection against environmental contamination risks. This innovative solution provides proactive and automated full-facility disinfection, contributing to infection control measures in healthcare settings.

Yet, the continuous rise of antimicrobial-resistant pathogens (AMR) emphasizes the urgency of implementing environmental countermeasures. A recent survey across 120 U.S. hospitals identified that while overall rates have nearly returned to pre-pandemic levels, hospital-acquired AMR infections were still observed to be 12% higher, mainly driven by difficult-to-treat gram-negative strains.

The use of ActivePure Technology extends to acute care, long-term care facilities, and commercial building settings as well. Interestingly, within skilled nursing facilities, a remarkable 94% reduction in COVID-19 cases among residents was demonstrated when ActivePure Medical systems were installed, compared to a 46% increase at control facilities without the technology.
