In a recent interview with Jacob Hutcherson from the Voice for Infection Prevention, Cristine Lacerna, DNP, MPH, RN, CIC, CPH discussed the various options for maintaining certification in the field of Infection Prevention. When asked about the necessity of retesting, Cristine explained that there are several pathways available, each with its own set of challenges and benefits.
Cristine mentioned that Infection Preventionists (IPs) have the option to retest if they choose to, either in person or at home. She noted that in-person retesting tends to be easier than the at-home option, which she has experienced firsthand. Another option for recertification is through Infection Prevention Units (IPUs), which she finds to be a more demanding process.
Despite the workload involved in recertifying through IPUs, Cristine sees significant value in this method. It not only credits IPs for their ongoing experience but also encourages them to engage in activities that stretch their professional capabilities. This might include joining external organizations or taking on speaking engagements, both of which help IPs grow beyond their daily roles and contribute to their professional development.
However, Cristine believes that the process could be made more streamlined and user-friendly. She pointed out that the job of an Infection Preventionist is already demanding, and simplifying the recertification process could alleviate some of the added stress. Nevertheless, she appreciates the IPU method for its emphasis on continuous learning and development, which ultimately benefits both the individuals and the field of Infection Prevention.
Cristine’s insights highlight the importance of flexible and supportive recertification pathways in maintaining high standards in Infection Prevention. By providing multiple options and encouraging professional growth, these pathways help ensure that IPs remain well-equipped to handle the evolving challenges of their critical roles.
