Resurgence of Measles: Insights for Hospital Infection Prevention

Building on the recent resurgence of measles, the focus of this article is the measurable uptick in measles cases in the United States in 2025. A worrisome prediction by experts, that falling vaccination rates would inevitably lead to a measles comeback, became a stark reality making 2025 a difficult year for infectious disease control. Pediatric infectious diseases director, Dr. Adam J Ratner, from Hassenfeld Children’s Hospital at New York University Langone, captured the challenging nature of this year.

By December, 42 states reported 1,912 measles cases—an alarming number and the highest recorded since 1992. Beginning as a mere handful of cases in a rural Texas county, the measles outbreak aggravated, culminating in 762 cases including an additional 100 in New Mexico, and claiming three lives. By the year’s end, outbreaks in Arizona, Utah, and South Carolina contributed to heightened numbers and stretched healthcare resources. The ripples of this viral expansion penetrated beyond US borders affecting neighboring Canada, leading to the revocation of America’s measles elimination status by the Pan American Health Organization.

This article aims to equip clinicians, especially those who have not seen a measles case due to its earlier elimination, with resources that detail key aspects of diagnosing measles and preventing in-hospital transmission. Various contributors share insights on lessons from previous outbreaks, confirming diagnosis, understanding diagnostic criteria and treatment options, and practices to prevent in-hospital spread. This includes guidance on addressing anti-vaccine activism stance, which plays a critical role in fostering vaccination awareness and adherence, thereby curbing the rate of infection.

Through these shared experiences and teachings, this article assists clinicians and healthcare providers in exercising effective preventive measures, improving diagnosis accuracy for a disease all too familiar yet less seen in recent past, and confronting the challenge of anti-vaccine collective consciousness.
