Regulations, Infections, and Reform: A Trio Impacting America’s Healthcare Landscape

The Biden administration recently enacted measures to curb unauthorized changes made to Affordable Care Act (ACA) insurance plans by brokers, as reported by Kaiser Health News. This response follows growing complaints regarding unexpected plan switches initiated by brokers without the policyholder’s knowledge, leading to unforeseen financial implications. Effective immediately, the new rules necessitate that brokers provide tangible proof of their association with a consumer’s policy prior to making any amendments. These regulations aim to protect consumer interests and ensure ethical practices within the insurance industry.

In the realm of hospital care, infection prevention professionals have become increasingly concerned about the escalation in antimicrobial-resistant pathogens. According to data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) cited by Fierce Healthcare, six of the seven monitored infections have seen a rise in prevalence between 2019 and 2022. The data also highlighted an almost five-fold increase in cases of Candida auris, an often deadly fungal infection.

In light of these troubling statistics, the Society for Healthcare Epidemiology of America has called for amplified federal funding and sustained investment in infection control and prevention strategies. These calls come amidst legislative discussions around a House bill proposing substantial cuts to CDC funding.

On the political stage, Vice President Kamala Harris has emerged as a key player in health policy. Widely recognized for her staunch advocacy of President Biden’s health initiatives, which include reforms in maternal health and the ACA, Harris’s stance on health care is likely to garner increasing attention following President Biden’s decision not to seek re-election. Harris’s policies, specifically her interest in extending postpartum Medicaid coverage and her unwavering support for abortion rights, highlight her commitment to ensuring healthcare equity and accessibility for all.
