Regional Hospitals Implement Strict Visitation Policies Amid Rising Respiratory Illnesses

In response to a rampant spread of flu and other respiratory conditions, four major hospital systems in North Carolina have moved to enforce restrictive visitation policies. Mission Hospital in Asheville is the most recent to institute such measures, in a proactive response to a State-wide increase in reported influenza-like illnesses which, according to statistics from the North Carolina Public Health Division, have exceeded six percent. With local transmission on the rise, Mission Health is striving to stem the tide by limiting each patient to two visitors and discouraging visits from children aged 13 and under.

This preventive measure will be upheld across all Mission Health hospitals and affiliates in the western part of the state, with a strict emphasis on patient health and safety. Patients displaying flu symptoms are urged to take necessary precautions such as staying home, practice considerate respiratory etiquette and seeking medical care at the appropriate healthcare facilities, avoiding emergency rooms unless symptoms grow severe. Despite the restriction potentially causing inconveniences, ensuring the communal health and safety remains paramount above all else.

Analogously, the Spartanburg Regional Healthcare System has made a public appeal to limit hospital visitations unless absolutely necessary, due to the upswing in seasonal flu illnesses, COVID-19 cases, and norovirus. These hospitals, along with the Spartanburg Hospital for Restorative Care and nursing homes, have also endorsed protective measures for both visitors and staff, including the use of masks and stringent hand hygiene practices. Prisma Health, another influential healthcare provider, will also prohibit children under 16 from visiting hospitalized patients starting from January 15. This proactive measure is described as a “best-practice step” to ensure hospitals continue as safe zones for high-standard patient care.

Rounding up the response is Bon Secours St. Francis, which announced a new policy that also limits patient visitation by children under 16 at their Eastside and Downtown locations. The hospital is also recommending visitors and staff to adopt diligent masking and hand hygiene practices. Those at risk of transmitting a respiratory illness are strongly advised to refrain from visiting patients. These combined efforts testify to the region’s continued commitment to public health, minimizing the spread and impact of these illnesses.
