Before COVID-19, the importance of the infection prevention department was often overlooked within hospitals and health systems, as it is not a revenue-producing department and does not generate direct financial savings.
The pandemic changed that perception. The critical work of IPs, usually conducted behind the scenes, became highly visible and undeniably essential. As hospitals and health systems faced unprecedented challenges, the value of a strong, unified infection prevention team became evident. Swift credited her direct boss for recognizing the need for her expanded role and title. She emphasized that effective leadership in infection prevention requires not only expertise and dedication but also the appropriate recognition and authority. “Sometimes to be an effective leader and to have that equal seat at the table, you need that equal title,” she explained.
