Promotion Amidst a Pandemic – Jamie Swift

Jamie Swift, MSN, RN, CIC, LTC-CIP, FAPIC, experienced a pivotal moment in her career during the COVID-19 pandemic, which ultimately led to her becoming the Chief Infection Prevention Officer and AVP of Infection Prevention. In a recent interview, she shared her insights on this significant transition and the factors that contributed to her new role.

Swift’s career journey had already included substantial experience as a corporate director, spanning over a decade. However, it was the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 that brought about a notable shift. Swift acknowledged that the pandemic underscored the crucial role of Infection Preventionists (IPs) on a national level. Before COVID-19, the importance of the infection prevention department was often overlooked within hospitals and health systems, as it is not a revenue-producing department and does not generate direct financial savings.

The pandemic changed that perception. The critical work of IPs, usually conducted behind the scenes, became highly visible and undeniably essential. As hospitals and health systems faced unprecedented challenges, the value of a strong, unified infection prevention team became evident. Swift’s leadership during this crisis was instrumental in highlighting the need for robust infection prevention strategies and structures at the corporate level.

Swift credited her direct boss for recognizing the need for her expanded role and title. She emphasized that effective leadership in infection prevention requires not only expertise and dedication but also the appropriate recognition and authority. “Sometimes to be an effective leader and to have that equal seat at the table, you need that equal title,” she explained. Her boss’s support was crucial in advocating for her promotion, ensuring that her contributions were acknowledged and valued.

The promotion to Chief Infection Prevention Officer and AVP of Infection Prevention was a significant milestone for Swift. It was a recognition of her leadership and the essential role of infection prevention in healthcare. Swift expressed her excitement and gratitude for the new title, which reflected her commitment to advancing infection prevention practices and her influence within the organization.

Swift’s experience during the pandemic serves as a testament to the evolving landscape of healthcare and the increasing recognition of the importance of infection prevention. Her journey highlights the need for continuous adaptation and the vital role of effective leadership in navigating healthcare crises. For other healthcare professionals, Swift’s story is an inspiring example of how dedication and resilience can lead to well-deserved recognition and opportunities for professional growth.
