Progress Reported in Yearly Health Care-Associated Infections Overview: A Deep Dive into CDC’s Latest Findings

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recently revealed its annual update on the state of healthcare-associated infections (HAIs) in the United States. This pivotal report released on November 6th displayed remarkable downward trends in hospitalisations last year.

Unpacking the statistics, one observes a promising 16% plunge in hospital-onset methicillin-resistant staphylococcus aureus (MRSA); a downturn of 15% in central line-associated bloodstream infections (CLABSI); a 13% reduction in hospital-onset Clostridioides difficile (C. difficile) infections; an 11% decline in catheter-associated urinary tract infections (CAUTI); and a slight, yet significant, 5% reduction in ventilator-associated events.

Reflecting on these figures, it becomes clear that the reductions align more closely with accomplishments achieved before the onslaught of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, according to the CDC’s analysis. Focusing on the performance of inpatient rehabilitation facilities, there has been a 14% decrease in hospital-onset C. difficile infection and an 8% heightening in CAUTI in 2023, while no substantial shifts in CLABSI and hospital-onset MRSA standardized infection ratios were noted when compared to 2022’s statistics.

Taking the perspective of long-term care hospitals, a 13% reduction was reported in hospital-onset C. difficile infections. However, no significant changes were observed in 2023’s Standardized Infection Ratios (SIRs) compared to the previous year. To foster continued advancements, the comprehensive report advises facilities to persistently bolster prevention methods and examine HAI surveillance data to unearth opportunities for refining interventions and strategies.
