Patience and Persistence are Key – Angel Mueller

For many students, internships serve as a crucial stepping stone to full-time employment. However, Angel Mueller’s path from graduate school to her first position in Infection Prevention was anything but typical. In a recent interview, Angel shared the challenges and unexpected turns she encountered on her journey, ultimately leading her to a fulfilling career in Infection Prevention.

After completing her practicum as part of her Master of Public Health (MPH) program, Angel transitioned into a paid internship. This was a welcome opportunity for her as a grad student, providing both valuable experience and financial support. However, unlike many internships that seamlessly transition into full-time positions, Angel’s path took a different route.

Angel described herself as a “long-term master’s student,” who extended the typical two-year program into five years. Balancing part-time studies with other responsibilities, she took her time completing the program. As graduation approached, Angel began actively searching for a position in Infection Prevention. However, the job market was not particularly welcoming, especially for someone without a nursing background. Uncertainty loomed as she wasn’t sure what opportunities, if any, would be available.

Fortune smiled on Angel when a part-time position opened up at a nearby hospital. This opportunity was ideal, aligning perfectly with her desire for part-time work as she transitioned out of school. The hospital had reached out to the University of Iowa, seeking recommendations for candidates, and Angel learned about the opening through her student internship connections. Grateful for the opportunity, she applied for the job and was accepted, beginning her career as an Infection Preventionist working two days a week.

This part-time role was exactly what Angel needed at the time, allowing her to gain hands-on experience in the field while easing into her new professional life. It also highlights the importance of networking and staying connected with mentors and colleagues during internships, as these relationships can often lead to unexpected opportunities. Angel’s journey is a testament to the idea that career paths don’t always follow a straight line; sometimes, taking a less traditional route can lead to the perfect fit.

Angel’s experience underscores the value of patience, persistence, and flexibility when navigating the transition from education to a professional career. Even when the road is uncertain, being open to part-time or unconventional opportunities can pave the way to long-term success.
