Overcoming Doubt and Building Trust in the OR: An Infection Prevention Journey – Shaunte Walton

Entering the operating room as an Infection Preventionist for the first time was a daunting experience for Shaunte Walton. In an interview, she recalls the apprehension she felt when assigned to oversee surgical site infection surveillance at the Cardiovascular Institute. Her role required her not only to monitor infection risks but also to engage with seasoned surgeons and provide recommendations. For someone new to Infection Prevention—whom Shaunte describes as a “baby IP”—the idea of advising long-established professionals was intimidating. This challenge forced her to dig deep and rely on her core strengths, helping her find ways to bridge the knowledge gap and gain respect in a high-stakes environment.

Shaunte’s initial experiences in the OR were met with skepticism. During her first day observing a procedure, a surgeon even paused to re-scrub his hands, gesturing that infection control was her primary concern. This reaction underscored the discomfort of entering a space where her presence wasn’t immediately understood. Instead of letting this discouragement define her, Shaunte took a step back and reassessed her approach. Recognizing that building rapport outside of the OR might improve her in-room interactions, she shifted her focus to relationship-building with surgeons outside of their demanding surgical schedules.

Shaunte’s strategy of connecting with surgeons in informal settings transformed her experience in the OR. By developing trust and familiarity with these professionals beforehand, she turned awkward encounters into moments of collaboration. Surgeons who had once been wary of her role began welcoming her into the OR, even inviting her to observe open-heart surgeries and explaining their techniques to her. This new dynamic created an environment where Shaunte could gain valuable insight into the clinical world, enhancing her infection prevention strategies and solidifying her place on the team.

These transformative interactions reignited Shaunte’s passion for both medicine and infectious disease. In a moment of reflection, she describes her time observing surgeons in action as “magical,” a seamless blending of her scientific expertise and her love for patient care. This experience in the OR deepened her understanding of the importance of Infection Prevention, as she could directly observe how her role impacted patient outcomes and how her recommendations were valued when she was seen as part of the team. Shaunte’s journey from outsider to trusted advisor shows the power of empathy and adaptability in overcoming workplace barriers.

Shaunte’s story is an inspiring example of how building trust and maintaining resilience can help overcome initial doubts and unfamiliarity. By meeting surgeons on their terms and showcasing her expertise respectfully, she gained the confidence and credibility to perform her role effectively. Her approach to relationship-building and perseverance in the face of skepticism demonstrates the value of empathy, collaboration, and personal growth, highlighting how an open mind and a dedicated spirit can transform any challenge into an opportunity for connection and impact.
