Optimized Utilization of Pandemic PPE Stockpile: A Case Study of Trinity Health

Throughout the worldwide COVID-19 pandemic, hospitals across the United States found themselves vastly overstocked with personal protective equipment (PPE), a consequence of the immediate demand surge to accommodate the treatment needs of the burgeoning COVID-19 patient load. However, a remarkable example of efficient PPE management in its wake has been exhibited by Trinity Health, based in Minot. This institute is warranting usage of its pandemic-acquired supply of PPE when many others are simply disposing of soon-to-expire stockpiles.

When the World Health Organization declared an end to the pandemic on May 5, 2023, many hospitals across the nation were left grappling with the task of efficiently managing the disposal of their leftover PPE supplies. Meanwhile, Trinity Health pivoted its strategy, astutely utilizing its abundantly bought stock. Infection control and supply chain management personnel have reported that all PPE purchased during the peak pandemic days is projected to be completely utilized within the next year, well before any expiration dates, thereby effectively preventing wastage. This is especially feasible given the slated bulk purchases of essential items like masks and gowns ahead of every flu season due to heightened protective needs. The hospital’s strategic management of PPE includes consolidated orders, tailoring purchases to current levels of usage, and reducing regular orders to compensate for their high pandemic-era stock.

Trinity Health employs six distinct isolation protocols for various illnesses, including COVID-19, requiring significant PPE use such as gowns, gloves, masks, and eye protection. The implementation of these protocols was facilitated by recommendations from the Center for Disease Control, which includes staying up-to-date with vaccinations, promoting good hygiene, and improving air cleanliness. Implying that a careful and strategic approach towards supply chain management has enabled Trinity Health to handle its excess PPE stock effectively post-pandemic.
