King’s Mill Hospital, located in Sutton-in-Ashfield, Nottinghamshire, experienced a wave of norovirus, commonly referred to as the ‘winter vomiting bug,’ prompting the closure of multiple wards. This highly infectious disease initially affected nine patients, necessitating the immediate shutdown of the first ward last Wednesday. While this ward was later reopened, the hospital had to close an additional two wards due to the escalating outbreak.
The Sherwood Forest Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, the administrative body overseeing the hospital, confirmed these developments on Friday. Sally Palmer, a nurse consultant specializing in infection prevention and control, expressed that she wasn’t surprised by the surge of the disease, stating, ‘we know that during the winter periods we will see cases of norovirus and we have plans in place to deal with that and to manage it safely.’
On Friday, the trust identified nine active norovirus cases, with seven patients demonstrating clear symptoms. In addition, a total of 32 patients had potentially been exposed to an infected patient. As a containment measure, the closed wards were prevented from admitting new patients. Simultaneously, patients who could return to their homes were released, while those requiring further care were retained.
Admissions to other care facilities, like care homes, were halted to prevent further spread. The hospital has intensified its cleaning procedures, especially in high-contact areas such as door handles, to manage the infection. Where possible, patients testing positive for the virus were isolated in side rooms to limit exposure to others.
Palmer underlined the importance of continuing to visit the hospital if necessary, assuring that all possible measures have been put into place to diminish the risk of further spread. While the hospital enters this season with the expectation of inevitable norovirus cases, they remain committed to reducing risk and managing outbreaks effectively.
