Currently, over 10% of these visits are flu-related as opposed to 6.5% from the previous season, marking an unprecedented rate over the last four years. Severity of the influenza was reported as ‘very high’ in Massachusetts for the week culminating on February 1, based on data from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Dr. Vinod Mohan, infectious disease prevention specialist at Heywood Healthcare draws attention to the contributing factors, which include lowered vaccination rates and simultaneous circulation of multiple influenza strains.
According to Dr. Mohan, while conclusive causes remain uncertain, there has been a reported surge in influenza-related and respiratory ailment admissions in various hospitals, including Heywood and Athol. This increase is coupled with high traffic in emergency rooms witnessed over the preceding weeks. The seasonal flu casualty statistics from Massachusetts depict a grim picture, with 98 flu-related deaths reported so far, 5 being children.
Dr. Mohan emphasizes on these figures to underline the crucial need for preventive measures. He advises, ‘It’s never too late for a flu shot. Vaccination remains one of the most effective methods in reducing symptom severity, avoiding hospitalization and curtailing complications.’
Vaccination rates currently stand only at 38% in Massachusetts, and in Gardner/Athol area, even lower at sub-30%. These numbers, according to Dr. Mohan, must be ameliorated to control the spread and alleviate pressure off the local healthcare systems.
