National Acclaim: LMH Health Earns Five-Star Ratings for Hospital Quality from CMS

In an impressive accomplishment, LMH Health has recently achieved a five-star rating for hospital quality, according to the rankings released by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS). Out of more than 2,200 hospitals across the United States, only 234 managed to reach this highest possible rating. LMH Health’s achievement underlines the institution’s commitment to excellence, viewed through the lens of their staff’s rigorous dedication towards providing top-tier care and service for their patients. Furthermore, it illustrates the ascending role that the CMS star rating plays as a benchmark within the healthcare industry.

The star ratings initiative, launched by CMS in 2016, simplifies the process of understanding hospital quality data for patients, their families, and caregivers. Hospitals participating in CMS programs are assessed on a multitude of metrics, spanning areas such as patient experience, readmission, mortality, safety of care, and delivering timely and effective healthcare. A composite star rating is then assigned to each hospital, thereby providing a holistic perspective of a hospital’s performance, measured against other participating hospitals.

Operating at the five-star level inherently demands an extraordinary level of commitment across all teams in a hospital. As noted by Dr. Kirk Sloan, LMH Health’s chief medical officer, being among the top 10% of the country is a phenomenal achievement. It is an affirmation of the fact that they maintain an excellent standard of patient care while being proactive and safe.

For the CMS star rating evaluation, LMH Health was assessed on a total of 45 different measures across five areas. The hospital notably outperformed in the area of mortality, reporting a 1.81% mortality rate compared to an expected rate of 1.97% for 2024, effectively meaning that they saved 11 patients who were not anticipated to survive.

Another area of focus for LMH Health is the prevention of infections. Spearheaded by the infection prevention team, this focus resonates across all departments. Rachel Lynch, the Director of Organizational Outcomes at LMH Health, highlighted the great levels of collaboration among hospital staff, leading to fewer infections and improved patient outcomes.

While LMH Health has done exceptionally well in regards to timely and effective care and patient experience, there are continuing efforts to improve. Initiatives in progress include a study to increase the efficiency and timeliness of patient care within the emergency department, a common area targeted for improvement. Despite resource constraints in comparison to larger institutions, they have manifested their dedication to high-quality local healthcare through this five-star achievement.

Through the effective reduction of patient readmission rates and delivering care that surpasses the national average, LMH credits its success to the collective effort of each individual contributing to patient care. By achieving a five-star rating, LMH proves that it stands shoulder to shoulder with other esteemed institutions, continuing its commitment to provide superior quality care.
