Mount Sinai Research Team Advances Infection Control Through Enhanced Fungal Pathogen Screening Protocols

A pioneering stride has been accomplished by researchers at Mount Sinai in the fight against the perilous fungal pathogen Candida auris. The New York City-based team has refined hospital screening methods, aiming to prevent the spread of difficult-to-eradicate fungal infections within medical facilities. Candida auris, which first emerged in 2016 in New York City, poses an alarming risk as it often resists typical antifungal treatments.

Classified by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention as an immediate global health threat, the fungus causes extensive health ailments, from bloodstream and wound infections to severe ear infections, especially in immunocompromised patients. Moreover, its ability to survive weeks on contaminated surfaces or medical devices augments its spread in healthcare settings.

The Mount Sinai team’s innovative solution promotes early detection in vulnerable patients, thereby curtailing potential outbreaks within hospitals. This enhanced strategy deviates from conventional approaches, which solely screen patients with explicit risk factors and tend to vary across medical facilities. The researchers screened all admitted patients who had resided in a nursing home within a month before admission, regardless of their individual risk factors.

By implementing these expanded protocols, experts at Mount Sinai were able to detect cases that might otherwise have slipped unnoticed. A retrospective review of all 591 patients transferred from nursing homes to Mount Sinai Brooklyn from January 2022 to September 2023 demonstrated the efficacy of these protocols. The results revealed that 14 cases, approximately 2.4 percent of the study group, tested positive for C. auris. These cases included both high-risk and low-risk patients, identifying eight cases that would have remained undiagnosed under previous screening procedures.

The discovery of these cases early on enabled the healthcare team to swiftly incorporate necessary precautions such as seclusion, disinfection, and contact procedures, preventing potentially calamitous fungal outbreaks. The researchers advocate for a broader implementation of the expanded screening guidelines in hospitals, stressing its instrumental role in reinforcing infection control measures, early identification of new cases, and targeted precautionary steps to reduce the risk of health facility-related outbreaks.

Moreover, the application of such proactive protocols, considering community prevalence rates, can act as a vital tool in managing the spread of this emergent global health concern.
