Mount Sinai Health System Releases the U.S.’s First Clinical Manual for Treating Infection-Associated Chronic Illnesses

In a groundbreaking healthcare initiative, New York-based Mount Sinai Health System has unveiled the first-ever U.S. clinical guide specifically designed to treat infection-associated chronic illnesses, according to a press release issued on August 13. The comprehensive clinical guide comes as an innovative response to the rising global prevalence of long-lasting infectious diseases such as Long COVID, long Lyme disease, Myalgic Encephalomyelitis/Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, and Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome.

As noted by Dr. David Putrino, the Nash Family Director of the Cohen Center, these chronic conditions are far from uncommon. Long COVID alone was noted to affect around 400 million people worldwide, with millions more combating similar infection-associated chronic illnesses. The available treatment capacity, however, doesn’t come close to catering to this massive health demand.

“With our clinical capacity primarily being able to accommodate only about 700 new patients per annum, the imbalance between demand and provision is stark,” stated Dr. Putrino. The unveiling of this treatment manual aims to bridge this significant healthcare gap by setting a new global standard of care for infection-related chronic diseases. It also aims to help equip clinicians with the necessary knowledge and tools to replicate and follow their treatment best practices.

The manual is a product of dedicated efforts from the Cohen Center for Recovery from Complex Chronic Illnesses. It offers an in-depth walkthrough to clinicians, guiding them through each stage of managing chronic illnesses — diagnosis, long-term treatment strategies, infection prohibition frameworks, multidisciplinary care models, and optimal patient communication techniques. Healthcare professionals can access this revolutionary resource here.
