McLaren Northern Michigan Hospital Continuously Recognized For Excellence in Infection Prevention and Patient Safety

The McLaren Northern Michigan Hospital in Petoskey has secured the status of a top-tier healthcare provider by earning an ‘A’ safety grade from The Leapfrog Group, a notch that it has held for five consecutive grading terms from 2019-2021. The Leapfrog Group, a nonprofit, is pivotal in driving quality, safety, and transparency in the nation’s healthcare system. Their evaluation and grading process employs 28 metrics of publicly accessible hospital safety data and is applied biannually to over 2,600 hospitals. The grading, illustrating high to low performance, ranges from A to F. Free to the public and completely transparent, this grading helps patients make informed decisions about their healthcare.

Expressing gratitude towards their hardworking staff, Andrew McDonagh, MD, the Chief Medical Officer at McLaren Northern Michigan, highlighted the importance of safety in the level of care they provide to their patients. He affirmed that the string of recognitions received over the terms is a testimony to their unwavering commitment to upholding the highest standards of healthcare in a conducive environment for healing. He also noted the honor truly underscores the team’s efforts to maintain high-quality patient-care.

In its recent review, the Leapfrog Group found McLaren Northern Michigan performing well-above average in 15 out of the 22 measures. These include vital areas like infection prevention, surgical safety, error prevention, and secure patient bedside practices, even though four measures were left unreported.
