Managing Scabies Outbreak in Geriatric Healthcare Setting: A Closer Look

In recent healthcare news, the geriatric hospital patients’ skin condition has been formally identified as scabies. This news was disclosed during a media briefing hosted at the Pan American Health Organization headquarters in Dayrells Road, St. Michael. The conference was led by the Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Kenneth George, who holds the distinctive title as the Most Honourable.

According to Dr. George, the nine afflicted patients from the St. Michael facility located at Beckles Road were grappling with what is termed as ‘partially treated scabies.’ This medical condition stems from a tiny, burrowing mite, which triggers intense itching and red rashes. Over the past few weeks, the healthcare facility noticed some unusual skin conditions cropping up among its patients. It became a priority to seek expert opinions for an accurate diagnosis, as this is indeed the medical community’s proper protocol.

While the facility faced some challenges in securing the right dermatology expert, they successfully enlisted a team that was able to confirm the diagnosis. This team visited the geriatric hospital on a specified Monday, examining the affected patients and conclusively diagnosing them with partially treated scabies.

This story is a potent reminder to those in the healthcare profession, particularly infection prevention specialists working in hospitals, to remain abreast of developments and updates.
