Several hospitals across Long Island have demonstrated stellar performance in maintaining health safety and quality, as evidenced by their recent exemplary ratings from The Leapfrog Group. This nationally recognized nonprofit watchdog organization specializing in healthcare safety and quality has awarded ‘A’ grades to these institutions. Twice a year, in spring and autumn, The Leapfrog Group evaluates about 3,000 hospitals across the country through its hospital safety grading system. Out of the 23 Long Island hospitals assessed, 11 received ‘A’ grades.
Among the top-rated Long Island hospitals, five are located in Nassau County. These include Catholic Health’s St. Francis Hospital and Heart Center in Roslyn, NYU Langone Hospital in Mineola, and Northwell Health’s Long Island Jewish Valley Stream, Glen Cove, and Plainview Hospitals. Notably, Northwell Health triumphed with 15 of its hospitals group-wide receiving ‘A’ grades.
“This recognition is a testament to the dedication of our entire workforce towards the safety and well-being of our patients,” affirmed John D’Angelo, the president and CEO of Northwell Health. NYU Langone earned distinguished recognition as it joined an exclusive group of hospital systems that have received 11 consecutive ‘A’ grades from The Leapfrog Group. Reinforcing this achievement, Alec Kimmelman, dean and CEO of NYU Langone Health, said, “Our reputation is built on delivering safe, top-quality care, and this is only possible because of our teams who consistently place their patients at the forefront every day.”
St. Francis Hospital continued its streak of excellence, achieving its 16th consecutive ‘A’ grade. The hospital takes pride in earning more ‘A’ grades than any other hospital in the state since the inception of the safety scores in 2012. Patrick O’Shaughnessy, the president and CEO of Catholic Health, expressed his commitment to consistently delivering high-quality care, attributing the repeat recognition to best practice implementations across the system.
In their November 13 press release, The Leapfrog Group highlighted how their hospital survey evaluates individual hospitals’ safety, quality, and efficiency using national performance measures. Key metrics include staffing levels, infection prevention protocols, adherence to hand hygiene guidelines, and responsiveness to critical events. A total of 143 hospitals were subjected to the evaluation in New York State.
