Leveraging Artificial Intelligence for Infection Prevention: A Glimpse into the Future

Emerging technologies, notably Artificial Intelligence (AI), provide exciting potential tools for improving infection control protocols within the healthcare setting. This trend was a key topic during the 34th European Society of Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases (ESCMID) Global conference in Barcelona, Spain, where the application of AI to enhance infection prevention and control was widely discussed. AI can be broadly defined as the use of advanced computational capacities to aid various tasks. It branches into machine learning, which relies on human-guided data extraction, and deep learning, a self-sufficient mechanism capable of analyzing massive data sets independently. In the past half-decade, nearly 4,000 academic contributions have been made concerning the application of AI in preventing and controlling healthcare-associated infections (HAIs), indicating a marked upswing from the 1,350 papers published between 1976 and 2018.

Consequently, AI’s potential in enhancing healthcare efficiency and efficacy is undeniably pervasive. The practical advantages of AI implementation cascade into multiple areas including surveillance, detection, predictive analyses, antimicrobial stewardship, environmental monitoring, patient-specific care, and training and education. One intriguing application of AI in infection control and prevention is facial recognition systems for monitoring correct face mask usage within hospital environments. These systems utilize complex algorithms to ascertain if an individual is appropriately wearing a face mask – a crucial consideration during entry into patient rooms. Along similar lines, AI-aided hand hygiene monitoring systems have been analyzed. These systems leverage computer vision and convolution neural networks to identify germs on hands, ensuring compliance with the World Health Organization’s hand hygiene standards.

Furthermore, AI offers significant opportunities in rationalizing hospital cleaning procedures through robots with environment-sensing capabilities. It can also assist in dissecting hospital outbreak patterns by analyzing interactions between patients, healthcare workers, medical devices, and exam rooms. Despite the surge in AI-related scholarly articles, AI still is at a nascent stage in this domain. It requires a multidisciplinary approach for successful incorporation in infection control strategies. Collaborative efforts from physicians and AI experts will bridge the knowledge gap regarding AI’s potential healthcare applications. Lack of regulation also impedes AI’s official integration into healthcare protocols. The future of AI in infection prevention holds immense promise, but a widespread adoption remains a challenging prospect.
