Lessons from Colorado’s Burgeoning Flu Season: A Focus on Prevention & Treatment

For many, New Year celebrations are synonymous with joy and laughter, but for Denver resident Justin Orr, the start of 2022 took a different turn. Experiencing worsening health symptoms that aggravated his existing asthma, Orr found himself being admitted to AdventHealth in Porter, Denver, for flu complications.

Unfortunately, Orr’s ordeal isn’t an isolated incident, with hundreds in Colorado hospitalized this flu season. Orr pointed out the significance of the annual flu vaccine, regretting missing out on it for the first time since his adulthood. Over six weeks ago, Denver7 raised concerns over potential spikes in illnesses prompted by reduced rates of flu and COVID-19 vaccinations. A mere 22 hospitalizations were reported at the time, a figure that has shockingly risen to 673.

The data from the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment (CDPHE) paints a worrying picture with a mere 13% of Colorado residents vaccinated against COVID-19 this season, and only 25% receiving the flu shot. The situation is further complicated by the simultaneous circulation of the flu and norovirus, putting additional strain on healthcare systems and patients.

Nevertheless, it’s worth noting the lack of a similar surge in COVID-19 cases, unlike the escalating flu and RSV statistics, possibly due to a steady rate of COVID infections over the summer. According to the latest influenza report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Colorado holds one of the highest flu rates nationwide.

The end of this battle against the viral diseases does not seem imminent, warns Dr. Jared Eddy, director of infection prevention at Denver’s National Jewish Health, emphasizing the necessity of following comprehensive testing protocols for both flu and COVID-19, and initiating antiviral treatments at the earliest sign of a positive result. Early intervention with antivirals can significantly maximize their effectiveness, combatting the severity of flu symptoms. Concerning symptom management, persistent high pulse rate and fever are red flags, warranting immediate medical attention.

Orr hopes his story will serve as a potent reminder for others about the value of preventive healthcare, highlighting the importance of receiving the annual flu shot. By sharing Orr’s experience, we aim to not only inform but also inspire action in our community, underpinning the importance of proactive health measures to keep oneself safe this flu season.
