Leadership Excellence and Innovation: Dr. Jeffrey Marshall Steps into New Role at UM Baltimore Washington Medical Center

The University of Maryland Baltimore Washington Medical Center (UM BWMC), an integral part of the University of Maryland Medical System (UMMS), has announced the appointment of Dr. Jeffrey Marshall, MD, MPH, to the positions of Vice President and Associate Chief Medical Officer. Dr. Marshall will be responsible for a broad spectrum of areas across the hospital and ambulatory care settings, including crucial facets such as quality, safety, infection prevention, regulatory compliance and accreditation, care management, and ethics. His role will also extend to the operations of the University of Maryland Baltimore Washington Medical Group, a comprehensive network made up of over 300 employed physicians and advanced practice providers.

In collaboration with Jason Heavner, MD, UM BWMC’s Senior Vice President and Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Marshall’s leadership will enable ongoing progress in research and academic medicine within a community hospital environment. This joint venture promises to enhance access to expert care, leading-edge clinical trials, and the latest medical innovations for residents of Anne Arundel County and nearby regions, in cooperation with UMMS and the University of Maryland School of Medicine.

Dr. Marshall is renowned for his leadership skills and steadfast commitment to excellence in clinical care, innovation, and community health. His ongoing contributions will be critical in expanding access to high-quality care and pioneering more advanced treatments and clinical research opportunities for dwellers of Anne Arundel County and beyond. An accomplished pulmonologist and critical care medicine specialist, Dr. Marshall is also known for his impactful research. His tenure at UM BWMC, starting from 2018, features several leadership positions and numerous significant initiatives.

Notably, Dr. Marshall is an active investigator leading clinical trials that assess the effectiveness of bedside interventions for critical care patients and explore the potential for artificial intelligence in improving earlier detection of lung cancer. His novel application of AI in recognizing smaller lung nodules led to the trial’s expansion from the Emergency Department, extending to other sections of UM BWMC’s inpatient and outpatient care settings.

Trained at Mount Sinai School of Medicine, Harvard Medical School, Yale University, Albany Medical College, and Oxford University, Dr. Marshall has a wealth of academic excellence as the foundation of his medical expertise. His current service in many system-wide leadership roles, including Chair of the UMMS Lab Stewardship Committee and the Organ Procurement Governance Committee, attests to his commitment to advancing healthcare.

UM BWMC and UMMS continue their dedication to improving health outcomes of local communities through quality care, groundbreaking research and academic partnerships. As a network of care, UMMS delivers 25 percent of all hospital care across Maryland, bringing academic medicine to urban, suburban, and rural communities.
