Kaiser Permanente South San Francisco hospital has been lauded by the independent national nonprofit organization, The Leapfrog Group, for its track record of delivering safe, high-quality healthcare. The organization annually assesses nearly 3,000 hospitals in the United States based on approximately two dozen parameters, including patient injuries, medical and medication errors, and hospital-acquired infections. Transparency in healthcare is championed by The Leapfrog Group through an open access report outlining the safety grades of hospitals. The organization independently releases these grades twice annually, during the spring and fall.
In the Fall 2025 report of the Leapfrog Group’s Hospital Safety Grade, the South San Francisco facility was among 11 Kaiser Permanente hospitals in Northern California to secure an exceptional ‘A’ grade. The other ‘A’ graded Kaiser Permanente facilities were located in Fresno, Manteca, Modesto, Redwood City, Roseville, San Leandro, San Rafael, Santa Clara, South Sacramento, and Vacaville.
Shasta Addessi, FACHE who serves as the Senior Vice President and Area Manager for Kaiser Permanente San Mateo, expressed pride regarding the hospital’s recognition. Emphasizing the fundamental place patient safety holds in the hospital, she acknowledged the relentless commitment of the hospital’s physicians, nurses, and auxiliary staff.
Edward Kao, MD, who acts as the Physician in Chief at Kaiser Permanente South San Francisco also touched on the importance of ensuring patients have consistent access to safe and empathetic care, as it directly influences health outcomes and patient’s quality of life.
Across the nation, Kaiser Permanente, one of America’s top integrated healthcare providers, operates 39 hospitals. Of these, nearly two-thirds (24 hospitals) clinched a Leapfrog Safety ‘A’ grade. In comparison, only roughly one-third of other hospitals nationwide were awarded the same recognition.
