Juggling Act: Balancing a Career in Infection Prevention with Family and Personal Interests

Jill E. Holdsworth, a distinguished infection prevention manager, shares her experiences and insights on the challenging task of balancing a demanding career with family responsibilities. Serving at Emory University Hospital Midtown in Atlanta, Georgia, Holdsworth’s professional and volunteer commitments are multifaceted. Aside from her role at the hospital, she holds important positions within the Association for the Advancement of Medical Instrumentation (AAMI) and the Healthcare Sterile Processing Association (HSPA). Additionally, she plays an active part in the Board of Directors of the Association for Professionals in Infection Control and Epidemiology (APIC) and voluntarily extends her skills as an EMT with the Emory Emergency Medical Service program.

Notably, Holdsworth successfully performs these roles while being a devoted wife and mother to two young boys. According to Holdsworth, the act of juggling numerous responsibilities is a test of resilience but also an opportunity for growth. Despite the demanding nature of her job, which was particularly heightened during the COVID-19 pandemic, she found the necessity to reset her perspective and focus more on family life.

Stressing the importance of open communication, advocating for personal needs, and prioritizing family and individual interests, Holdsworth encourages all working parents to seek a delicate balance between professional duties and home life. Beyond her career and family, Holdsworth exemplifies the importance of pursuing personal interests for overall well-being. During the crisis-period of the pandemic, she rediscovered fulfillment in her involvement with EMS services, even with its challenging night shifts. Furthermore, she finds joy in her volunteering efforts with organizations like AAMI and APIC, sharing her knowledge, contributing to her profession, and engaging in writing. Such pursuits are a testament to the significance of maintaining a personal/professional equilibrium for the sake of one’s well-being.
