Inside the SPARC: Ensuring Healthcare Preparedness for Special Pathogens

The Special Pathogens Response Center (SPARC) at UNC Hospitals is a key regional and national instrument for the safe care of patients affected by special pathogens. It offers a valuable perspective on how healthcare professionals arm themselves with the necessary training and preparation at the UNC Medical Center.

SPARC boasts a multidisciplinary team of experts comprising professionals from medicine, nursing, and laboratory science among other fields, united in their commitment to advocate for a culture underpinned by readiness and preparedness for potential outbreaks of special pathogens. The SPARC response team is made up of well-versed members who take part in regular training sessions and demonstrations designed around a practical approach to staying ready for any challenge that might present itself.

According to Brooke Brewer, BSN, RN, MS, CIC, Infection Prevention Program Manager at the Special Pathogen Response Center, the motive behind their rigorous training schedules is not fear, but rather an unwavering commitment to providing protection for their communities, their patients, and their team. SPARC is an integral part of an extensive, coordinated network consisting of 13 Regional Emerging Special Pathogens Treatment Centers (RESPTC) dispersed throughout the U.S.

The program derives its funding at a federal level from the Administration for Strategic Response and Preparedness (ASPR), with the National Emerging Special Pathogens Training and Education Center (NETEC) acting as its supervisory body.
