Innovative Wound Care Protocol Minimizes Post-Surgical Brain Infection: A Study by UCI Health

Research conducted by UCI Health indicates a significant reduction in the risk of post-brain surgery infections owing to a novel wound care protocol. Aside from reducing infection risk, the protocol also markedly improved the appearance of incisions.

A multidisciplinary team of specialists, including neurosurgeons, neurosurgical nurses, wound care experts, and infection preventionists, was instrumental in developing this novel methodology for managing postoperative wounds, an area currently devoid of a standard protocol. Their paper, entitled ‘Postoperative wound care protocol prevents surgical site infection after craniotomy,’ was published in the esteemed journal ‘Infection Control and Hospital Epidemiology.’

The effectiveness of a systematic protocol devised to mitigate the risk of infection following surgical procedures was tested by the team. They studied 3,560 craniotomies performed at UCI Medical Center over a span of 72 months. The observed procedure not only improved the appearance of the wound but also significantly lessened surgical site infection by half.

The team duly noted this success as an epitome of a collaborative and organized performance enhancement drive involving medical personnel from diverse specialties. Craniotomies, despite being common surgical procedures in the U.S., pose varying risks of infection. The newly developed protocol has the potential to mitigate the risk of grave infections in numerous patients requiring brain surgery annually.

UCI Health, a prominent player in California’s healthcare domain, provides an array of services including tertiary and quaternary care and operates a flagship medical center, four hospitals, and numerous ambulatory care centers across Orange and Los Angeles counties.
