Innovative Nurse Summer Camp: A Platform for Future Healthcare Professionals

Welcome to the world of innovative medical education where Atlanta’s Piedmont Fayette Hospital takes the responsibility of equipping the future generation of healthcare professionals. In a bid to pique the interest of high schoolers and foster their potential for service in healthcare, the hospital has devised a unique approach. Nurse camp, a brainchild of Halea Caudill, the hospital’s Residency Coordinator, combines traditional summer camp activities with exposure to professional healthcare training, providing an enriching and exhilarating experience for its youthful attendees. The free camp offers rising juniors and seniors a unique and immersive exploration into the diverse aspects of nursing, ranging from infection control measures to checking blood pressure. Beyond just high-school education, this summer camp allows these students to form the crucial first bonds with the world of professional nursing.

The objective of this nurse camp, now celebrating its third year in 2025, extends beyond education. It is designed to help the youthful attendees cultivate valuable professional relationships and broaden their perspective about healthcare. Placed in an environment rich with professional experience and knowledge, the students get the opportunity to learn and grow while sharpening their healthcare-oriented skills. Caudill, an active participant in numerous volunteer missions overseas, envisages transforming the healthcare system of her community by empowering the future generation of healthcare providers.

The seed of this ground-breaking initiative was sown in 2022 during the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic. With the aim of rebuilding the workforce, Caudill and her team targeted enthusiastic high school students showing interest in healthcare, intending to foster their growth and inspire them to serve their community.

The curriculum of the nurse camp is an eclectic bouquet of activities, offering the students bite-sized, yet comprehensive insight into the world of nursing. They are introduced to the safety protocols to follow in the hospital, emphasizing the significance of infection control in a world teeming with germs. The camp also features an enriching presentation on the history of nursing, fostering an understanding and appreciation of the profession’s origins and evolution.

The attendees are not merely passive learners. They get the chance to shadow the nursing staff, gaining first-hand experience in patient care. This experience encourages them to leverage their learnings in their personal surroundings, thus amplifying the impact of the educational initiative. It breaks down the larger-than-life portrayal of healthcare professionals in popular media (‘Grey’s Anatomy’), presenting an authentic, albeit exciting, peek into the world of nursing.

The campers will have the chance to spend considerable time shadowing nurses in various hospital departments, affording them a fantastic opportunity to explore control rooms, emergency rooms, and critical care units. This will help them understand the dynamicity and versatility inherent to the profession of nursing, providing a realistic feel of the challenges and rewards that come with dedicating one’s life to healthcare.

The Piedmont Fayette Hospital Summer Camp runs from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on June 2 through June 4. The application deadline is on March 21 and the successful applicants will be notified by April 1. This is a perfect opportunity for high schoolers to dip their toes into the world of healthcare, setting a solid foundation for their prospective careers.
