Innovating Infection Prevention: Deriving Insights from the IMPACT Grand Rounds Led by Dr. Susan Huang

The IMPACT Collaboratory recently hosted Dr. Susan Huang, a renowned medical professional and impactful authority in the realm of healthcare-associated infections and multidrug-resistant organisms (MDROs), for one of the grand rounds. Dr. Huang’s position as a professor at the University of California Irvine School of Medicine, in the Division of Infectious Diseases and the Health Policy Research Institute, in addition to being the medical director of epidemiology and infection prevention at UC Irvine Health, lends substantial credibility and value to her insights.

In her grand round, Dr. Huang provided a deep dive into her research on reducing infections, hospitalizations, and antibiotic-resistant pathogens in nursing homes through universal nasal decolonization and bathing with chlorhexidine. Her presentation reaffirmed the critical role of stringent measures and preventative drives in curbing the spread of healthcare-associated infections, particularly in sensitive environments like nursing homes.

Dr. Huang’s illustrious career includes active and integral participation in the NIH Health Care Systems Research Collaboratory, where her seminal work on pragmatic clinical trials to mitigate the occurrence of MRSA disease and other healthcare-associated infections has left a profound mark. Further, she has over 200 research publications in esteemed, peer-reviewed journals, cementing her standing as an undisputed authority on the subject.

She has also drawing attention to the regional prevention of MDROs in hospitals and nursing homes, combining extensive epidemiological studies with simulation models. Previously, she served on HICPAC, a federal guidelines committee for infection prevention, and the technical expert panel for infection prevention and care transitions between acute and long-term care facilities for the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services.

The IMPACT Collaboratory conducts an array of free webinars every third Thursday of each month, designed for the community of professionals focused on pragmatic clinical trials on non-pharmacological interventions for individuals living with dementia, along with their care partners. Dr. Huang’s recent contribution to the Grand Rounds only highlights their commitment to facilitating a knowledge-rich platform.

Remember, participation in these webinars does not require any prior registration and any professionals interested can join at their convenience. Look forward to the availability of a webinar recording and a companion podcast on their official website the week following the event.
