Due to a significant rise in influenza cases, hospitals in the Tri-State area, including Ascension St. Vincent Evansville, Good Samaritan Hospital, and Ascension St. Vincent Warrick, among others, have implemented temporary visitor restrictions. The measures, recommended by members of the Community Patient Safety Coalition of Southwest Indiana/Kentucky, are intended to limit the spread of the infection.
Notably, visitors will be required to wear masks and maintain proper hand hygiene within the facilities. Visitation from individuals below the age of 16 or those exhibiting flu symptoms such as fever, cough, and headaches, among others, will be prohibited. However, facilities may allow exceptions based on unique circumstances such as births or end of life situations.
Deaconess Health System has reported an increase in flu-related hospitalizations among older adults and pediatric patients. The strain of influenza prevalent this season appears to have more severe implication, causing prolonged recovery times. Health officials continue to encourage vaccination as well as maintaining good personal hygiene as preventive measures against viral infections.
Partial exemptions will be allowed for certain circumstances such as childbirth or end of life situations. Furthermore, health leaders in the region advocate for the RSV vaccine for pregnant women and senior citizens while the flu and COVID-19 vaccines are recommended for individuals from 6 months of age. Vaccines are a strategic tool to contain the spread of influenza, RSV, and COVID-19 and subsequently prevent severe infection cases. Therefore, residents are encouraged to consult with their medical providers regarding the vaccines necessary for their protection.
