Infection prevention routine plans: An innovative approach to Ebola preparedness in nursing

The initiative recently announced by the John F. Kennedy Medical Center (JFKMC) to enhance nurses’ education and awareness on Ebola Virus Disease preparedness is strictly a precautionary measure, according to the hospital’s Director of Nursing Services, Mrs. Joana D. Joekai. This initiative, a part of the center’s ongoing commitment to infection prevention planning, was implemented under Mrs. Joekai’s leadership.

Manifesting her professional and ethical responsibilities, Mrs. Joekai spearheaded this unique initiative for enhancing preparedness and ensuring a safe environment within the ES Grant Memorial and Maternity Hospitals of JFKMC. It aims at priming healthcare institutions for potential outbreaks of any highly infectious diseases, including Ebola Virus Disease, thereby safeguarding the safety of healthcare workers and patients.

Mrs. Joekai underscored that the initiative was not a response to any confirmed outbreak. Rather, its design is rooted in the drive to augment readiness and bolster infection prevention and control practices among healthcare professionals. She stressed the importance of Liberia’s health system remaining vigilant due to its history with Ebola Virus Disease. This, she pointed out, necessitates the continuity of training and preparedness, even during times when there are no active cases.

The training was centered around enhancing awareness, refining safety protocols, and advancing response readiness. The overall objective is to ensure that nurses and other healthcare workers are comprehensively prepared to tackle potential public health emergencies.

Mrs. Joekai accentuated the importance of reinforcing preparedness systems within hospitals. This she argues, is instrumental in protecting both patients and healthcare workers, especially under high-risk clinical environments. In line with this, she reasserted her dedication to uphold stringent safety standards within the hospital system. The focus is also on securing ongoing professional development for nursing staff.

Creating a safe and precautionary environment requires joint efforts, and Mrs. Joekai emphasizes that these initiatives are integral components of larger national efforts. The ultimate goal is to fortify infection prevention and control capacities across Liberia’s health sector.
