As Eastern North Carolina experiences an unexpected surge in cases caused by an unanticipated, highly contagious flu strain, certain hospitals have begun limiting patient visitation in an effort to control the spread of the virus. This emergent flu strain was not expected and hence, not covered by this year’s flu vaccinations, leading to an unprecedented number of patients requiring medical assistance. CarolinaEast Medical Center in New Bern is a case in point, where to safeguard both patient health and the health of the workforce, they have imposed a limitation of a maximum of two visitors per patient, mandatory age limit of visitors, upwards of 12.
This surprising new strain came into existence post the finalization of this year’s vaccines’ formulation, leaving individuals unprotected. Cathy Fischer, the Infection Prevention Director at CarolinaEast, conveys this predicament clearly, stating that it represents a mutated strain that materialised after the vaccine’s completion, thereby leaving the population vulnerable to infection. The strain’s rapid diffusion has raised alarm.
Fischer also raises awareness about the strain’s inherent danger – its extremely contagious nature and the fact that it can be transferred up to two days prior to the manifestation of symptoms, a characteristic that heightens the risk in healthcare settings. The recent visitation restrictions have been partially necessitated by the fact that children under the age of 12 are highly effective carriers of such germs.
In spite of the vaccine’s limited efficiency against this particular strain, Fischer still strongly advocates for vaccination and adherence to good hygiene practices. She emphasizes that even an imperfect vaccination can reduce the severity of the illness and calls for frequent handwashing as a frontline defence against the spread of germs.
Other healthcare facilities, including ECU Health, Carteret Health Care, and the Onslow Memorial Hospital have incorporated similar visitation restrictions in response to the flu outbreak. Details of the restrictions are shared, like forbidding visitors aged 11 and below from entering inpatient zones and waiting rooms, excluding anyone exhibiting respiratory symptoms from these areas regardless of age, and permitting healthy visitors in hospital common areas. Some facilities, faced with overwhelming numbers, may redirect visitors to off-site locations in line with safety protocol, while others advise on restricting visitor groups to 1 – 2 individuals.
