Infection Outbreaks: How Procedures and Protocols Helped Control COVID-19 at Kootenay Boundary Regional Hospital

Interior Health announced on Monday, February 9, 2026, the successful containment and conclusion of a COVID-19 outbreak that had affected the third-floor medical unit at Kootenay Boundary Regional Hospital. The declaration of the end of the outbreak serves as an acknowledgment of the effective application of rigorous infection prevention and control measures implemented to handle such a situation.

The outbreak, which was first identified on January 30 and involved an initial cluster of eight cases, eventually amounted to a total of 11 confirmed cases by the time it was officially declared over on February 9.Various measures were employed during this period to contain the spread of the virus. In addition to enhanced cleaning and disinfection protocols, effective utilization of personal protective equipment (PPE) was closely adhered to, with restrictions set in place to permit only essential visitors within the hospital premises. Members of the public were explicitly urged by Interior Health not to visit patients if they had been feeling unwell, or if they had been in contact with anyone who was ill.

Respiratory diseases can often be transmitted through droplets released by an infected individual while coughing or sneezing. These droplets can easily enter another person’s eyes, nose, or mouth, or contaminate various surfaces such as doorknobs, countertops, clothing, and hands. Displaying symptoms such as a new or worsening cough, fever, weakness, a runny nose, sore throat, or headache might be indicative of such an infection.

As a result, Interior Health continues to stress the importance of regular handwashing and other fundamental infection-control measures in order to limit the spread of respiratory illnesses. For transparency and public awareness, Interior Health’s website maintains a constantly updated list of active facility outbreaks at hospitals and long-term care facilities that are regulated under the Hospital Act or licensed under the Community Care and Assisted Living Act. Facilities are removed from this list once their respective outbreaks have been declared over.
